Guten Tag, y’all!
I know summer’s almost over, but I wholeheartedly believe that it’s never too late to pick up a good book! So here are some books that I recommend–two that I’ve finished, two that I’m in the process of reading.
Salvage the Bones | Jesmyn Ward
This is one that I’m currently reading. So much of the popular, promoted literature about the American South covers only the Civil Rights era or the time before that (and this is important!). Salvage the Bones, on the other hand, takes place in 21st century Mississippi, just before Hurricane Katrina. So far, it’s very good; no wonder it won a National Book Award.
Wench | Dolen Perkins-Valdez
Man. There are SO many good things to say about this book, which tells the story of enslaved black women who accompany their Southern masters to a summer resort in Ohio. The catch? These women are not just their servants–they’re also their mistresses. This book beautifully written, and the story itself is poetic and heartbroken. The characters–especially the red-headed Mawu–will stay with you long after you’ve turned the last page.
Lean In | Sheryl Sandberg
If you are a professional woman who hasn’t been living under a rock, then chances are you’ve heard about this book. So far, this is a REALLY good read with practical, insightful advice. Though a lot of the anecdotes are from Silicon Valley, the advice is applicable across industries. It’s got me thinking about how and when I’m going to return to the workforce.
I Love Your Style | Amanda Brooks
My friend Stevie is super chic and has a style that is uniquely hers, so when she mentioned this book as one that helped hone her style, I made a mental note to check it out. The verdict: this book is awesome. Where my favorite style book (Nina Garcia’s Little Black Book of Style) lays out general guidelines, this book breaks down the elements of specific styles, like minimalism and bohemian. The best part? It’s full of colorful pictures.
So that’s my summer reading list! If you know someone who’s looking for a good book to read, do share this list with her!
